About electricFX

electricFX is a new intermedia performance system released by John Crawford as a framework to investigate embodied human-computer interaction through movement and other forms of dynamic expression. His collaborative research in this area connects body-centered practices in dance, music and theatre with innovative methods for expanded media performance and responsive system design. His intermedia art projects are performed in theatres, exhibited in galleries and presented as interactive installations, featuring creative exploration of environmentalism, climate justice and community engagement.

The electricFX system simplifies the process of creating interactive performance environments through a collection of media objects developed by Crawford and colleagues. Implemented using a mix of custom-built software, commercially-available products and open-source media programming tools, the electricFX media objects incorporate motion tracking technology for representing and responding to human movement through real-time sensing and analysis of location, speed, duration and various other characteristics. Other electricFX media objects support multi-channel live video and audio processing, generative animation, mediabase storage/retrieval and high bandwidth networking.
